ZOOM LECTURE: SYMMETRY & SURPRISE: The KALEIDOSCOPE AS DESIGN INSPIRATION

In this 5-day class, we’ll explore the possibilities offered by complex textiles while demystifying the nature of symmetry. I’ve distilled thirty years of complex quiltmaking into simple theories that explain my idiosyncratic patchwork sensibility and define my way of thinking about fabric.
We’ll spend the first few days studying two different approaches. After learning design strategies and techniques for each, students can choose to begin a complex kaleidoscope or a Puzzle Quilt.

The Puzzle Quilt (2 Day Class)
Unlock the secrets of fabric interaction in this eye-opening two-day workshop! A Puzzle Quilt is a clever sampler in which every block design is used twice, yet through strategic fabric choices, each block appears entirely unique.

Opulent Ornament (2 day Class)
Release your inner embellisher and create a luminous, show-stopping ornament—no sewing required! Using a simple yet sophisticated folding and pinning technique, you’ll learn to harness the repetitive flow of kaleidoscopic prints to build a complex, symmetrical treasure.
