Every snowflake that gently falls to earth is equally compelling.

In 2001, I wrote a book called SNOWFLAKES & QUILTS (C&T Publishing). It focused on how to create the endless variations found in snowflakes using the techniques and materials of quiltmaking. Here's the first paragraph of the book: 

For years, I've pored over snowflake photomicrographs as if they were moonscapes and I'm the one responsible for a safe landing. As of this writing, I haven't found any evidence of teensy frostbitten aliens, but I have concocted some design guidelines I'm happy to share. They can't possibly be scientifically true, because we all know snowflake aren't really made out of blue fabric, but they work for me.

My exploration led me to WA Bentley who at the age of nineteen became the first person to take a photograph of a snowflake in 1885. Bentley spent the next 47 years photographing almost 6000 snowflakes on his working farm in Jericho, VT. He is credited with the remarkable discovery, now common knowledge, that no two snowflakes are alike.

I made my second snowflake quilt in 2000, KALEIDOSCOPIC XXII: Ice Crystals, 41” x 54”.  Now, nineteen years later, it is a great and rare gift to share the images with you in textiles that captures the elegant symmetry of an ice crystal.
