Where In the World

One of the perks of my unexpected, uncharted career is the many places it's taken me. I've taught in all but two states (Mississippi and West Virginia) and in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Canada, England, France, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland and Taiwan. I've also taught while floating past lots of countries on quilt cruises with at least one non-teaching day to get off the ship and explore Korea, China, Panama, Indonesia, Iceland, Australia to name a few. You can see the itinerary for the June 2020 Best of Western Europe Cruise here: https://www.paulanadelstern.com/itinerary.php

Along the journey, there have been lots of beautiful textile sightings and lots of brag-worthy shopping (in Bali we toured Ikat factories and bought assorted batik jelly rolls for $7).

This collection is an homage to my global stash. Each of the six patterns is rendered in three colorways: Pink Multi, Blue Multi and Green Multi. Scroll down for repeat sizes.

BALI, BANGKOK, HAWAII and RIO are the mirror imaging divas. BELIZE (2534) is a user-friendly allover bubbling with nuances. Maybe I should have called it Champagne. Use this pattern randomly to instill lots of fascinating shading and depth.

2530 BALI places crisp, iconic black and white motifs, seen throughout Indonesia, against the impression of a woven ikat ground. The small white diamonds speckled throughout the design promises to animate any patchwork.

2531 BANGKOK is inspired by an astonishing visit to Thailand where I stayed with my great friend, quilt artist Iris Gowen. She is a docent at the National Museum and describes my version as “Beyond Benjarong“.  Benjarong is the traditional Thai fabric incorporating 5 classic colors in very classical patterns. I've taken a bit of artistic license adding the white dots that liven up the surface.

2532 HAWAII is waterfalls and rainbows, jungles and surreal sunrises and sunsets. It's dichroic glass, it's psychedelic and it's just waiting to take off on a piecing adventure with you.

2533 RIO references the flamboyant plumes and fanlike costumes of Mardi Gras revelers. At the same time, the clarity of the details in this unique kaleidoscopic layout delivers a design both elegant and vibrant.

2529 WHERE IN THE WORLD PANEL is a recoloring of Super Kaleiders from my WONDERLUST collection. They are reproductions of three of the twelve 20” square kaleidoscopic I made for my exhibition KALEIDOSCOPE QUILTS: The Art of Paula Nadelstern at the Museum of American Folk Art, NYC, spring and summer 2009.
